INTERSKI CONGRESS 2023 - THE (GUEST) EXPERIENCE IS EVERYTHING

The Interski Congress 2023 is just around the corner. This quadrennial event for ski and snowboard instructors will be held in Levi, Finland, this year. 1,500 enthusiastic winter sports instructors and professionals from 35 different countries are expected to attend, where they will spend several days exchanging ideas on relevant topics in winter sports. The agenda includes workshops, lectures, demonstrations, and themed evenings. Above all, the Interski Congress stands for global networking with people who share a common passion for snow sports. This has always been the core of the event, and it is important to nurture and preserve it.

THE (GUEST) EXPERIENCE IS EVERYTHING

The central theme of the Interski 2023 congress in Levi is "THE (GUEST) EXPERIENCE IS EVERYTHING." As Jonathan Ballou , head of one of the world's largest ski schools, aptly described in the "Snowsports Insight" interview ( read it here ), the focus is no longer on topics such as progress, didactics, or methodology, as was the case at previous Interski congresses. It's less about teaching; rather, the learning, experience, and overall enjoyment of the guest take on a significantly higher priority.

Interski itself also sees a snow sports instructor less as a teacher in the classical sense, but rather as a service provider in an experience industry:

"The experience of snow sports instruction is more than just the service provided by the instructor or the school. It encompasses the ski resort, the snow conditions, the weather, the equipment, the safety, the pedagogical approach, and the circumstances that each individual faces."

This approach clearly illustrates how challenging the work of a modern snow sports instructor can be. It's no longer enough to simply memorize the curriculum and replay the program hour after hour, like a record on a turntable. Instead, it's essential to adapt one's teaching style to the needs and expectations of the guests.

This topic will be explored and discussed in greater depth at Interski 2023. It will be interesting to see what national and cultural differences exist in this regard. The congress itself will also serve as an indicator, as the expectations of the participants vary considerably due to their international background, age, gender, and qualification levels.
