The level 3 snowboard instructor education in Austria is the second level of training in the Austrian snowboard teaching system and follows the snowboard instructor level 1+2 (Anwärter) training. It is part of the state-regulated training and concludes with a theoretical and practical examination administered by a panel of experts.


The course lasts 10 days. The aim of the training is professional and technical development at a high sporting level, as well as preparation for further qualifications such as the entrance examination to become a level 3 snowboard instructor.

Objectives of the Snowboard Level 3 Instructor Education

The snowboard instructor level 3 education qualifies participants to teach advanced snowboarders of all ages. A particular focus is placed on off-piste riding and guiding, as well as the safe execution of demanding techniques on groomed slopes.


The focus is on the targeted development of individual skills – both in technical areas and in freestyle and racing. Upon successful completion, graduates are able to conduct high-quality and methodically structured lessons at an advanced level and actively participate in training programs within a ski school.


Furthermore, the training serves as targeted preparation for the entrance examination to become a "State-certified Snowboard Instructor".

Contents of the Snowboard Instructor Level 3 Course

The snowboard instructor level 3 education is divided into a theoretical and a practical part. The practical sessions take place daily on the snow, followed by the theory sessions.

In practice, the entire technical spectrum, from drift turns to dynamic carving variations, is explored in depth. Additionally, freestyle elements, terrain features, and racing techniques are practiced. The goal is the safe and precise execution of these techniques in diverse snow and terrain conditions.

Which exams must be taken?

The Snowboard level 3 Instructor training concludes with a final examination in theory and practice, administered by a panel of examiners. A teaching demonstration is also required.

Theoretical exam:

The theoretical exam consists of various subjects that are covered together throughout the course. These include: kinesiology, pedagogy, snow and avalanche science, materials science, English, and first aid.

Practical exam:

The practical exam takes place on the last two days of the course. Participants demonstrate the techniques of the Austrian snowboard school in various runs. These are divided into "school riding," "off-piste riding," "freestyle," and "racing."

  • School riding: Drift turn with high unloading, short turn, carving with high unloading, carving with low unloading

  • Terrain: Free off-road driving, changes in rhythm

  • Freestyle: Switch Carving, Freestyle Basics, Rotation Kicker (Easy Line), Straight Jump Kicker (Medium Line), Box

  • Giant slalom


Teaching appearance:

The third section is the so-called "teaching presentation", in which each participant gives a lesson of approximately 20 minutes on a previously assigned topic.

What will I receive after completing the training?

The examinations for ski or snowboard instructors are conducted by the Vienna Ski and Snowboard Instructors Association in accordance with the provisions of the Vienna State Law. Upon successful completion of the examination, participants receive a certificate from the Vienna Ski and Snowboard Instructors Association, which is recognized throughout Austria.

Who are the instructors?

You will be taught by instructors from the Snowsports Academy. All of them hold at least the qualification of "State-Certified Snowboard Instructor." All team members have many years of teaching experience or even run their own snow sports schools. With their knowledge and experience, they prepare participants perfectly for a career as a snowboard instructor.
